Freeborn's Powerhouse Bar & Grill has new owners

FREEBORN - About a month and a half ago, Jim and Donna Beckman and their three children and spouses decided to get involved in something they had never undertaken before.
Becoming the new owners of the Powerhouse Bar & Grill, they replaced former owner Dale Hedensten, who had been associated with the bar for several years.
"My parents have wanted to do something like this for a long time, so when the opportunity arose, they took it," said Theo Beckman, who has actually been bartending at the bar since 2000.
Since the family became owners Nov. 9, there have been many changes at the establishment.
Tuesday nights are now poker nights; Wednesday nights are taco nights; and on the second and fourth Sunday there's a steak fry.
Everyday there is a different lunch special, and recently the family has started having a Saturday morning breakfast.
Theo said the family also hopes to start doing bar bingo again after the new year, and on Jan. 26, they will have their official grand opening, featuring the band 73 Paces.
To give the bar a fresh start, they are also toying with the idea of having a contest to rename the bar.
"It's been an adventure so far, that's for sure," Theo said.
"It's been quite a change from what it was," sister Afton Thofson said.
During the day, more older people have been stopping in for lunch, which hadn't really happened before, she said. Overall, there's been a lot of new people trying it out.
Looking down the road a couple years, Theo said the family would like to start having more entertainment at the bar, especially since pool has lately become a dying sport around there.
"Entertainment and food - those are our top priorities," he said.
